Kerala: Journalist killed after IAS officer’s car rams into his bike

In a shocking incident, a local journalist was killed after a car of an IAS officer rammed into his bike last night at Thiruvananthapuram.

The victim has been identified as 35-year-old KM Basheer, Bureau Chief of Malayalam daily Siraj.

The incident took place at around 1:00 am in the heart of the city, the police said.

As per the reports, the IAS officer Sriram Venkatraman, 2012 batch officer and Director of Survey and Land Record, was drunk while driving the car. Also, a woman was also sitting in the IAS officer’s blue Volkswagen, police said.

According to the reports of PTI, Police said, “There were conflicting statements. We have now confirmed from independent witnesses that Sreeram Venkitaraman was driving the vehicle.”

As per the eyewitness, the over speeding car was being driven by Sriram and then, his car rammed into the bike of the journalist and skidded to a wall of the public office at 1:35 am. The journalist died on the spot.

Moreover, Sriram was also injured and admitted to a private hospital.

As per the reports of NDTV, an auto-driver also said that the IAS was in intoxicated but, also tried to provide first aid to the victim.

Sriram was recently returned from the US after spending a year in Harvard and posted as Director of Survey and land Records on August 1. Also, he was the second topper in 2012 batch and a doctor by training.

He was a Sub-collector in Devikulam in Idukki district and also cracked land mafia in the district. He had gained popularity for taking action against local CPI (M) legislator who had also encroached on some land. Later, he was transferred before his tenure got completed in Devikulam.
