Karnataka: Lung Cancer Cases on the Rise, Experts Sound Alarm

Bengaluru: Lung cancer cases are increasing at an alarming rate in Karnataka, with tobacco consumption being the primary cause of concern. According to experts, the disease has become more aggressive, and young people are falling prey to it. On World Lung Cancer Day, doctors are raising awareness about the dangers of tobacco and the need for early diagnosis and treatment.

Rise in Lung Cancer Cases

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the state, accounting for 12.05% of all cancer deaths among men and 8.9% among women. Experts warn that passive smoking and second-hand smoke are also contributing to the rise in lung cancer cases, particularly among women aged 40-45.

Worrying Trends

According to Dr C. Nagraj, Director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD), more than 50% of patients visiting the hospital are smokers. "Out of the 250-260 patients we see daily, around 150 are smokers," he said. Dr. Ravindra Mehta, a pulmonologist, notes that lung cancer cases are increasing among people who do not smoke, especially among those aged 40-50.

Smoking and Lung Cancer

Medical oncologist Dr Mohammad Naseer warns that small-cell lung cancer, a rare but aggressive form of the disease, is on the rise. "The prognosis is poor, and early diagnosis is crucial," he said. Dr. Arvind Kasturi, a community medicine specialist, emphasises the need for policy changes, community participation, and multi-level prevention activities to combat the disease.

Warning Signs

Experts caution that symptoms of lung cancer, such as persistent cough, unexplained weight loss, wheezing, and chest pain, should not be ignored. "Early diagnosis and treatment are key to survival," Dr. Mehta said.

Challenges Ahead

Experts point out that indoor air pollution, environmental pollution, and unhealthy lifestyles are contributing to the rise in lung cancer cases. Moreover, lack of awareness, late diagnosis, and limited access to healthcare facilities in rural areas are major challenges.

Seven-Fold Increase by 2025

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) - National Cancer Registry Programme, the number of lung cancer cases is expected to increase seven-fold by 2025.
