New Delhi: Speaking at the Navkar Mahamantra Divas held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Jain literature as the foundation of India’s intellectual brilliance. “Preserving this knowledge is our duty,” he said, urging efforts to safeguard ancient Jain texts as part of the country’s spiritual and scholarly legacy.
Prakrit and Pali get Classical Language status
The Prime Minister announced that the government has accorded Classical Language status to Prakrit and Pali—languages historically linked to Jain and Buddhist traditions—highlighting their deep cultural and academic value.
Personal connection with Jain philosophy
Sharing his own spiritual journey, PM Modi said, “I was born in Gujarat where the influence of Jainism is visible in every street. Since childhood, I have been in the company of Jain Acharyas.” He added that reciting the Navkar Mantra evokes a sense of reverence, as it involves bowing to the Panch Parmeshthi.
Jain architecture reflected in Parliament
PM Modi pointed out how Jainism’s influence is visible in the new Parliament building. “As soon as you enter through the Shardula Dwar, you see the Sammed Shikhar in the gallery. There is an idol of a Tirthankara at the Lok Sabha entrance—this idol has returned from Australia,” he said. A painting of Lord Mahavir graces the roof of the Constitution Hall, and all 24 Tirthankaras are depicted on its wall.
Gyan Bharatam to digitise spiritual heritage
Announcing the 'Gyan Bharatam Mission' unveiled in the Union Budget, the Prime Minister said it would involve the surveying and digitisation of millions of ancient manuscripts. “Through this mission, we will connect antiquity with modernity,” he said, adding that Artificial Intelligence could help bring India's spiritual knowledge to a global audience.
Ancient idols brought back to India
PM Modi said more than 20 statues of Tirthankaras have been retrieved from abroad in recent years. He called these recoveries a source of national pride and part of a larger cultural revival.
Technology and tradition to shape New India
Emphasising that India’s development will be rooted in its ancient values, PM Modi said, “A developed India means progress as well as heritage—an India that will not stop, that will not pause, that will touch great heights without being severed from its roots.”
Navkar Mahamantra Divas brings communities together
The Prime Minister inaugurated the event and joined Jain spiritual leaders and community members in chanting the Navkar Mantra. He described the moment as spiritually energising and a symbol of unity. The event aimed to celebrate Jain philosophy and its teachings of peace, self-awareness, and harmony.
