A PhD scholar from IIT Madras was found dead at his residence in Chennai’s Velachery, police said on April 2.
The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old Sachin Kumar Jain, who was pursuing PhD degree in the Mechanical Engineering branch of the reputed institution.
According to police, Sachin was found hanging at his residence on March 31.

The PHD scholar was a native of West Bengal and was living in a rented apartment in Velachery. He had gone to his regular classes at the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Institute’s Guindy campus in the morning and returned to his rented accommodation without informing anyone.
When Sachin’s friends called him and got no response, they reached his residence and found him hanging in the dining hall.
Velachery Police reached the spot after getting the information and sent the body for autopsy.
An investigation has been initiated into the matter.
Unfortunately, this is the second incident in the month of March. On March 14 a third year BTech student of the same institution died by suicide. The 20-year-old student of the Electrical Engineering Department found hanging in his hostel room. He was the native of Andhra Pradesh.
A post-graduate student of engineering at IIT Madras also committed suicide on February 14, 2023. He also found dead in his hostel room.
