Jai Ram Thakur’s resignation came after the Congress party’s thumping win in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections.
Notably, Jai Ram Thakur won his Siraj seat in the election.
The hill state maintained the custom of changing its government in every five years. To form the government in Himachal Pradesh a party needs to secure 35 seats. The Congress party has managed to win 39 seats, while the BJP has won 18 seats. The Independent candidates have won 3 seats, and could potentially play a crucial role in government formation.
Accepting the people’s mandate, Thakur said that he and party leaders would need to analyse what went wrong.
