The Delhi High Court on 25th September acquitted Mahmood Farooqui who co-directed famous Bollywood film like 'Peepli Live' with his wife, Anusha Rizvi in a rape case.
High Court Justice Ashutosh Kumar set aside the trial court's order in which the director was awarded 7-year jail term for raping an American based researcher at his residence in the year 2015. The court's order demands the police to release Farooqi who is currently in jail as per orders from the trial court.
The co-director of the film was given benefit of doubt due to the delay in FIR. The rape victim has filed the FIR several weeks later after the alleged incident takes place. Mr. Farooqui was convicted by the trial court under new rape laws inacted in the year 2013 and was awarded 7-year jail.
Following the order from trial court Mahmood had appealed against his seven-year jail term.
On September 1, justice Ashutosh Kumar reserved the verdict after hearing the argument of counsel.
On 4 August 2016, the trial court had sent him to jail for seven years for taking advantage of a US-based researcher when she was alone in his house.
On 30 July 2016, the court had held Farooqui guilty of raping (in the drunken state) the American woman in the year 2015.
On 19 June 2015, The police has lodged n FIR against Mahmood on the woman's complaint after which he was arrested.
On 29 July 29, 2015, the police had filed its charge sheet against Farooqui alleging he had raped the research scholar from Columbia University at his Sukhdev Vihar house in South Delhi on 28 March 2015.
