The central government has made Aadhaar card linking mandatory with every government and other official works. But, several complaints have been made by the consumers that their all personal data is in danger and it can be accessed by anyone easily. Recently, the Aadhaar data leak news also comes to light which created panic situation among the citizens.
Well, the Centre has given a relief to the people that it is not mandatory to use Aadhaar card for getting a mobile SIM. The Central government has directed telecom companies that they should also accept other alternative documents like driving licence, passport and voter ID card etc. for issuing the SIM card to an individual.
According to the reports of TOI, the information was announced by the Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan that 'the telecom companies have been asked to follow the directives immediately.'
However, last week, the Supreme Court also raised the questions over the govt's decision to mandate the Aadhaar card linking with mobile numbers.
The apex court has also clarified that Aadhar card is not mandatory for getting a SIM card until it will not announce the final decision. Reportedly, the ministry has also instructed to all telecom companies that don't deny any customers to give them a SIM card even if they don't have Aadhaar card. Telecom Secretary also said that they should also accept other forms of KYC (know your customer) documents to avail the SIM cards to customers.
