Ahead of the election for the new Congress president, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot backed Rahul Gandhi and said that he should accept the position of the party chief. Gehlot further asserted that the party is unanimously in his favour and members would be disappointed if he doesn't accept the position.
"If Rahul Gandhi does not become the party president, it will be a disappointment for Congressmen across the country," said CM Gehlot. He said that Gandhi should understand the feeling of the party workers and accept the post of Congress president.
"The unanimous opinion is in support of his (Rahul Gandhi) becoming the president. So, I think he should accept it.,” Gehlot added.
The Rajasthan Chief Minister also slammed those who questioned the role of the Gandhi family within the grand old party.
It is the Congress who kept the democracy alive in the country because of which Narendra Modi is now the Prime Minister and Arvind Kejriwal is Delhi Chief Minister, Gehlot said.
The election for the new Congress president is scheduled to be held between August 21 and September 20. The post is currently headed by Sonia Gandhi, who took over after her son resigned from the post in the year 2019.
