In a recent controversy, the fugitive jeweler Mehul Choksi has said that he can join the court proceedings with the video conference but cannot travel to India.
Choksi, in a written reply to the court has said, that Enforcement Directorate has lead the court in a misleading way by not revealing the deteriorating health condition and that he has been in the touch of the banks to settle the matter and repay the loans.
In an affidavit by the ED to the court, the agency has asked to declare fugitive Mehul Choksi an economic offender and cease his property.
Earlier, on the request of the CBI, the International Police (INTERPOL) had issued an arrest warrant an a red-corner notice against Mehul Choksi. Both Mehul Choksi and Nirav Modi are accused to siphon off Rs 13,000 crore from the Punjab National Bank and fled the country earlier, in January this year.
“There is one option and according to that, investigation can be done through video conferencing. Officer from India can go to Antigua in order to investigate him. The third option is that if his condition gets better in three months and if his doctors allow him to, then he will come back to India to join investigation,” said Sanjay Abbot, the lawyer of Mehul Choksi.
In the list of economic offenders who fled the country are Vijay Mallya, Mehul Choksi and Nirav Modi.
