The CBI had argued that if Lalu Yadav is granted bail, he would immediately take to political work, ahead of national polls. The Lady Yadav’s lawyer, Kapil Sibal, argued Lalu Yadav was given a 14-year sentence and not 25 years, and he is not "running away".
Responding to which, CJI Ranjan Gogoi said, "Whether it is 25 years or 14, the High Court will decide. We can ask the High Court to expedite the cases against politicians." The top court said, Lalu Yadav has served only 14 months against his 25-year conviction.
Sibal asked what could be the danger if Lalu Yadav will be granted bail, to which the top court replied, "There is no danger, except you are convicted. We don't think we can grant bail dismissed."
The three cases in which Lalu Prasad has been convicted are related to the over-Rs 900-crore fodder scam, which pertains to fraudulent withdrawal of money from the treasuries in the Animal Husbandry department in the early 1990s when Jharkhand was part of Bihar.
