CWC Meet: Rahul to remain Congress chief as Committee rejects his resignation offer

Congress Working Committee on Saturday turned down Rahul Gandhi's resignation from party president post in the key meet. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala confirmed that Rahul Gandhi offered his resignation, however, the committee turned down it.

"Party President Rahul Gandhi offered his resignation but it was rejected by the members of CWC unanimously," Randeep Surjewala said.

"CWC has given Congress President the right to makes changes to restructure the party, a plan for this will be brought soon," Randeep Surjewala added.


"I don't agree that it was a disastrous performance, but we were not able to rise up to the expectations. Party will discuss this in details...Today we had only general discussions," AKm Antony said while addressing media.

The top leadership body of Congress introspected what went wrong in the party’s performance in the national election as BJP-led NDA won over 350 seats in the 542 Lok Sabha constituencies that went to polls.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath was conspicously missing from the crucial CWC meeting held in New Delhi today.

Fifty-two members of the Congress Working Committee, which includes UP general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former PMhan Singh and the chief ministers of all Congress-ruled states - Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh -met today to analyse the party's debacle showing in the national election.

Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi, a home turf, to BJP's Smriti Irani. Taking 100 per cent responsibility. The Congress won 52 seats across the country, while the BJP scored 300-plus tally. In short, the Congress has been wiped out in 17 states and Union Territories in the national election.
