CWC Meet: Rahul Gandhi resignation offer rejected by Committee; Congress clarifies

Rahul Gandhi offered to step down as Congress President at a key Congress Working Committee (CWC) meet on Saturday. The Congress leadership at the committee meeting turned down Rahul Gandhi's resignation, said sources.

"Congress President Rahul Gandhi offers his resignation at CWC, but it has not been accepted by the Committee," reported ANI.


However, Congress' Randeep Singh Surjewala clarified reports of Congress President Rahul Gandhi offering his resignation and termed it incorrect. He said, "CWC meeting going on."

General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi and the top leaders of the persuaded him not to resign, says sources.

The top leadership body of Congress introspected what went wrong in the party’s performance in the national election as BJP-led NDA won over 350 seats in the 542 Lok Sabha constituencies that went to polls.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath was conspicously missing from the crucial CWC meeting held in New Delhi today.

Fifty-two members of the Congress Working Committee, which includes UP general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former PMhan Singh and the chief ministers of all Congress-ruled states - Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh -met today to analyse the party's debacle showing in the national election.

Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi, a home turf, to BJP's Smriti Irani. Taking 100 per cent responsibility. The Congress won 52 seats across the country, while the BJP scored 300-plus tally. In short, the Congress has been wiped out in 17 states and Union Territories in the national election.
