Coronavirus: Section 144 clamped in Delhi to prevent further spread of Covid-19

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code were imposed in the national capital on Sunday to avert further spread of Coronavirus. Delhi has seen 31 positive cases thus far.

The order prohibits protests, processions, demonstrations among other types of congregation for social, cultural, political, religious, academic and sports. This orders along with the decision to closedown Metro rail network across the nation including the Delhi metro till 31st March is expected to reduce chances of community transmission of the disease via gatherings and crowds at public places.

The order will will come into force from 9 pm on Sunday and also bans the organisation of weekly market expect for essential goods across Delhi.

“Organisation of weekly markets (except for vegetable, fruits and essential commodities), concerts, exhibitions, etc is prohibited,” the order states.

Delhi government has yesterday announced restrictions on gatherings of more than five people in the state. The order says that there is a “likelihood of fast and widespread community transmission” and the steps are being taken in a bid to avert it.

Any violation of the order issued by the Delhi Police Commissioner will be actionable under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

The order also elucidates that any individual either infected or suspected to be infected must abide by quarantine rules and comply with directions of the surveillance person.
