The total tally of Covid-19 cases in India went past the 6,000 mark on Friday morning. According to the Health Ministry, a total of 6,412 people in the country have tested positive for coronavirus thus far.
While the number of cases has soared in the past two weeks and cases have already been reported from 31 states and Union Territories, these cases aren’t evenly spread out across the nation. States such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Rajasthan and Telangana have come out as hotspots and are the worst hit states in India.
As a whole, these five states is responsible for 59% of all coronavirus cases in India; 64% of all Coronavirus deaths and 45% of all recoveries.
Here is a look at five worst hit states in India:
1. Maharashtra:
Maharashtra is without a doubt the biggest hot spot for Covid-19 cases in India. As of 8 am on Friday, Maharashtra had a total of 1,364 coronavirus cases. Of these, 125 have recuperated.
But apart from the total number, what is also disturbing is the high number of people who have lost their lives because of coronavirus thus far. According to the Health Ministry’ data 97 people have lost their lives in Maharashtra because of Covid-19 thus far. This is the highest in the country and is almost 49% of the country’s total death.
2. Tamil Nadu:
Following Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country. As of Friday, the state had reported 834 cases. This is 13% of India’s total figure. Most of these cases were reported in the last one week that saw an increase in coronavirus cases in the state.
With reference to deaths, eight people have lost their lives in Tamil Nadu because of coronavirus, which is comparatively much lower than Maharashtra. Apart from this , 21 people have recovered thus far.
3. Delhi:
Delhi is the third worst hit state in terms of the total number of coronavirus cases. The capital has so far reported 720 coronavirus cases, of which 25 have recuperated and 12 have lost their lives.
The national capital is responsible for 11% of India’s coronavirus patients. But, death toll have been much lower than in Maharashtra.
4. Rajasthan:
With 463 coronavirus cases, the state of Rajasthan accounts for 7.2% of India’s total cases. The state, like others, have witnessed an increase in fresh cases in the last one week. It was also among one of the first states where coronavirus cases were reported.
According to the government data, thus far three people have lost their lives because of Sars-CoV-2 in Rajasthan and 21 have recovered.
5. Telangana:
The fifth worst hit state in the country is Telangana. The state had reported 442 cases till today. Of these 442 cases, 35 have recovered.
