Coronavirus: Delhi govt to lockdown national capital if required, bans gathering of more than 5 people

The Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday stated that the government has not decided to lockdown the national capital but may do so if called for. Kejriwal stated that the government has also decided to prohibit all gatherings of more than five people in Delhi.

In a statement, the Delhi CM stated, "I appeal to all of you to discontinue your morning walks for some time and stay at home. We are not doing a lockdown currently but we might in future, if necessary, for your betterment and safety."


Talking about the ban on gatherings, Kejriwal stated, "Five or more people cannot gather at any place in Delhi. If there are five people, they should maintain at least one-metre distance from each other."

Apart from this, Arvind Kejriwal also announced that his government has decided to augment pensions for senior citizens, differently abled and widows for the month of April.

"We will provide food in night shelters free of cost," Arvind Kejriwal said.

During his press conference, Arvind Kejriwal stated that restrictions because of coronavirus were bringing about terribal financial strain to the poor.

He announced that those taking ration from fair price shops would get 50% extra for next month.

The government has also curtailed the size of social, religious and political congregation to not more than five people. It has not enforced lockdown in the national capital, but will do so if needed, said Kejriwal.

The Delhi Chief Minister stated that only 50% buses would run on roads in Delhi during the ‘Janata curfew’ on 22nd March.

"Rs 4000-5000 pension will be paid to 8.5 lakh beneficiaries by April 7," he said.

"Seventy-two lakh people in Delhi get ration from fair price shops. Ration per person being increased by 50 per cent. It will be provided free," the chief minister said.

"We are extremely concerned about daily wagers, labourers amid coronavirus crisis; don't want anyone to go hungry," he said, adding that food would be provided for homeless in night shelters.
