Coronavirus: 57-year-old man dies in Kolkata, death tally rises to 8

The eight coronavirus associated death in India occured in West Bengal’s Kolkata on Monday. A 57-year-old, had not travel history abroad, sources said in the private hospital where he was kept – infusing concern about the chain of transmission. Lack of ability to trace the chain of transmission shows that the virus has entered the 3rd stage.

This was the seventh case of coronavirus in the state of Bengal, where the virus made a late advent last week.


The first case of Covid-19 in Bengal was a student who arrived from the UK. The young man was out and about and even went to a mall before he tested positive of the pathogen.

About the latest case, the hospital stated that the 57-year-old was a resident of Dum Dum. He was admitted on 16th March, with complaints of dry cough and fever. His symptoms aggravated on 19th March, with severe respiratory distress syndrome and was put on ventilator.

He test samples were sent to both NICED and the city’s SSKM hosspital, one of which came positive. Another specimen sent on 21st March also proved to be positive. He passed away at 3:35 pm after a heart attack.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who had strong message for people breaching quarantine has announced a lockdown in all the urban areas of the state.

Earlier in the day, CM Mamata Banerjee wrote to PM Modi, asking all incoming flights to the state be halted.

The Bengal Chief Minister, who transformed an indoor stadium in the state in to a makeshift hospital as part of preparation for Covid-19, has stated that the state is not getting sufficient help from the center to battle the coronavirus that has claimed more than 11,000 lives across the world.
