New Delhi: Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit has expressed his support for the Centre's ordinance against the Delhi government, cautioning Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal about the potential consequences of not gaining control over the Vigilance department.
Dikshit emphasized that Kejriwal is well aware that failing to secure control could result in a jail sentence of 8-10 years.
Support from Sandeep Dikshit and Opposition Leaders
In an interview with ANI, Sandeep Dikshit, son of former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit, declared his endorsement of the ordinance against the Delhi government. He specifically mentioned that CM Arvind Kejriwal understands the gravity of the situation and the potential legal repercussions he may face if he fails to gain control over the vigilance department.
Dikshit's statement comes in the wake of support from other prominent opposition leaders. Sitaram Yechury, the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), and K Chandrashekhar Rao, the Chief Minister of Telangana and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief, have also extended their support to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor against the Centre's ordinance on control over administrative services in Delhi.
Kejriwal's Nationwide Tour for Support
Kejriwal embarked on a nationwide tour on May 23 with the aim of garnering support from opposition parties against the ordinance. During his tour, he met with various prominent leaders, including West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, former Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav, seeking their support in this matter.
The Ordinance and its Background
The Union government introduced an ordinance on May 19 to notify rules for the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) concerning "transfer posting, vigilance, and other incidental matters." This ordinance aimed to amend the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991.
