CAA Protest: Yogi govt asks 28 people to pay Rs 14 lakh for property damage in UP

The state of Uttar Pradesh observed massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act this month, In which the death toll in the state plunged to 16. Earlier, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had warned of strict measures against those taking part in stone pelting and causing damage to public property.

Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur district his become the first part of the state to put forth the process of recovery of damage to public property.

As per the media reports, similar type of notices were furnished to 28 people across Rampur district, where the administration held them responsible for the violence and causing damage to public property.

The authorities have also solicited an explanation as to why recoveries should not be made for damages worth Rs 14.86 lakh.

According to the notice, loss of property worth Rs 14,86,500 has been quoted. It lists, inter alias like like, a police jeep of bhot police station, motorcycle of a sub-inspector, motorcycle of City Kotwali police station, wireless set, hooter/loudspeaker, 10 dandas, helmets and three body protector.

Commenting on the notice, Rampur District Magistrate Aunjaneya Kumar Singh stated notices were put forth to 28 people after the police discovered their role in protest.

“We issued notices to 28 persons whose role were found by police during investigation. Police submitted evidences against them. They (28) have been asked to submit their response within a week, otherwise the process of recovery against them will be started. Of the 28, a few have been arrested while raids are on to trace others. An accused and his family can submit evidence to support their plea that they have been wrongly booked in the case," Singh said.

As per the district administration, notices were put forth after the state government issued an order based on a direction from the Allahabad High Court.

The UP police possess video, photograph, CCTV footage of those involved in the CAA protest.

The UP police on Monday stated that they have arrested the state head of Popular Front of India and 16 other of the Islamist outfit in connection with the violence. Wasim, the state head of the outfit, was taken into custody for allegedly orchestrating the violence, the police stated.

All inclusive, 925 people have been arrested across the state, since the violence started, the police stated.

Earlier, UP Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma had stated that authorities suspect the role of PFI and Students Islamic Movement in India in the violence during the anti CAA protest in the state.

UP police have seized flags, pamphlets, placards, and banners and posters of NRC and CAA protest from them, the SSP stated.

At the same time, the police have ordered its personnel to ensure intensive patrolling in crowded places, including churches, malls and markest in the state on Wednesday.
