Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mukhtar Ansari and seven others have been acquitted in connection with contractor Manna Singh's murder case while three others were convicted by the Mau Court.
Earlier in January this year, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sent a legal notice to the BSP supremo Mayawati and objected gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari and his brother's entry into the BSP.
BJP leader Ashok Singh, who is the witness to the murder of Manna Singh, a local contractor allegedly killed by Ansari's gang in 2009, sent the notice to the BSP chief.
Ansari contested the recently concluded Uttar Pradesh elections from the Mau assembly constituency on BSP ticket and won the seat.
In 2010, Ansari was also booked for the murder of Ram Singh Maurya, who was a witness to the murder of Manna Singh.
Ansari has been elected as a MLA from the Mau constituency a record five times. He was the prime accused in the Krishnanand Rai murder case among other crimes, and has pleaded not guilty. Currently, he is lodged in Banda district jail.
