Auto, taxi fares hiked

Residents of the national capital may find it a little more difficult to hire autorickshaws or taxis now that the Delhi Government has increased the prices.

As per the latest notification issued on January 11, the Delhi Government notified new rates of auto-taxi fares to give relief to autorickshaw and taxi owners amid rising inflation.

Autorikshaws New Fare

As per the revised rates, the minimum charge for an autorickshaw has been increased by Rs 5. which means the meter will be down from Rs 30, currently, the base fare is Rs 25. The per-kilometer fare will be Rs 11, up from Rs 9.5 currently.

Taxis New Fare

The Delhi Government has hiked the per km fare of non-AC taxis from Rs 14 to Rs 17. The charge is levied after the minimum bases fare which is Rs 40. Passengers will have to pay Rs 20 per km for a AC taxi, instead of 16

The night charges for taxis, 25 percent, will remain unchanged. The waiting charge will be charged at Rs 1 per minute after 15 minutes stay, currently it is Rs 30. Not only this, passengers will have to pay Rs 15 on extra luggage, currently it is Rs 10.

Earlier the fares of autorikshaw were revised in 2020. For taxi, which includes black-and-yellow taxi, economy taxi and premium taxi, the revision happened in 2013.

CNG Price Hike

The prices of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) were hiked in October 2022 from Rs 47 to Rs 78. This hike came as a major setback for the autorikshaw and taxi drivers as it directly impacted their earnings. CNG prices in Delhi have gone up by a record Rs 22.60 per kg in 14 installments since March 7. The reason behind the price hike is a surge in input natural gas prices. The current price of CNG in Delhi is Rs 78.61 per kg.

Since April 2021 the CNG prices have increased drastically in the national capital. The prices have been hiked by 80 percent since 2021.  In April 2021, CNG will cost Rs 43.40 per kg.

Several representations from autorickshaw and taxi associations met Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot and requested them to increase the fares.
