A faculty member of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead at his official residence in Assam’s North Guwahati area. The deceased identified as 47-year-old Dr Sameer Kamal, a faculty in the Mathematics Department.
Kamrup district Superintendent of Police Hitesh Ch. Roy said that a preliminary investigation revealed that Kamal committed suicide.
"We suspect that he allegedly committed suicide two-three days back. The body has been sent to the hospital for post-mortem," Roy said.
On December 9 evening, police received information from IIT Guwahati that a foul smell was coming from a locked faculty quarter – (Faculty Quarter D 022). When the cops forced open the door, Kamal was found hanging from the ceiling fan.

"Later the door was opened in the presence of Magistrate, Officer-in-Charge of North Guwahati police station, In-charge Amingaon outpost," Roy added.
Mourning the death, IIT Guwahati issued a statement: "The institute is trying to establish contact with the family of the deceased. IIT Guwahati expresses its deepest condolences to the family at this time of profound grief. We will cooperate with the police investigation and will also commission an internal investigation on this matter."

Over the past few years, several suicide incident by students were reported from the prestigious institute.
In October this year, a 20-year-old student was found hanging in his hostel room. He hailed from Andhra Pradesh.
