Anti-CAA Protest by Jamia Millia Islamia students today, Delhi Police denies permission

Delhi Police has denied permission to the Anti- Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest being organised by students Jamia Millia Islamia today (Friday) in the capital. The students plan to reach up to Jantar Mantar but Delhi Police has stepped up security arrangement and declared "no one will be allowed to stage a protest at Jantar Mantar".

Violence Pre-planned: Security agencies

Delhi has witnessed violent protests in some areas in the last couple of days. The security agencies believe that such violent protests are pre-planned and executed by anti-social elements.

Delhi Police has denied permission to all kinds of protests in Delhi today. Friday's protest call by Jamia students has got the support from Bhim Army and few other Muslim organisations.

Violent protests in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar

Earlier on Thursday, simultaneous protests raged in multiple cities with thousands-strong crowds of students, activists and others defying prohibitory orders to voice their dissent against the newly amended citizenship law, resulting in violence in parts of UP and Bihar and detention of hundreds across the country.

Clampdown on internet services

On Thursday, authorities resorted to barricading and a clampdown on mobile services, including an unprecedented one in the national capital, while protesters also faced tear gas shelling and police batons at some places including in Uttar Pradesh where incidents of arson and stone-pelting gave the protests a violent colour.

Opposition parties also joined forces to attack the Modi government on the new law which they said goes against the "idea of India", even as the ruling BJP asserted there would be no rethink on implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and that the National Register of Citizens (NRC) would also be brought in.
