AMU row: BJP criticizes Congress' Ghulam Nabi Azad's remarks at AMU event, calls it abuse and demeaning for Hindus

The BJP has criticized the remarks of senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and has accused Congress of “demeaning and demoralizing” Hindus and termed it as an “abuse”.

Mr Azad reportedly made the comments at an event of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Lucknow on Wednesday, apparently to criticise the political climate under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government.

BJP spokesperson attacked the Congress party and said that why fewer people were calling Mr. Azad was because of the falling stock of the Congress.

These are not ordinary words. It is an abuse for the country's secular fabric and Hindus. It is yet another attempt by the Congress to demean and demoralise Hindus," Mr. Patra told reporters.

He even rejected Mr. Azad's allegation that the BJP is defaming the AMU and targeting Kashmiri students, saying if prayer meetings are held for terrorists then it will be condemned.

Sambit Patra also accused the confluence of the opposition party’s of conspiring against Hindus and said its leaders have used terms like "Hindu Taliban", "Hindu Pakistan" and "Hindu terrorists" in the past.

Earlier, three Kashmiri students of the Aligarh Muslim University were suspended and booked for sedition last week for allegedly raising "anti-India" slogans and trying to hold a prayer meeting for Hizbul Mujahideen commander Manan Bashir Wani, who was killed in an encounter in north Kashmir.

The politicization in the Indian universities and deteriorate the environment of the varsities started since the suicide of Rohith Vemula in Hyderabad and thereafter, the infamous JNU incident which made the surfacing line of indifference visible, everywhere on internet, TV and newspapers.
