In the Aircel-Maxis case, the CBI has informed the special court that it has received a permission from the Centre to prosecute P. Chidambaram and his son Karti.
The CBI has filed an application in the court of Special Judge O P Saini, and the CBI in the application has said that it has filed a chargesheet in the Aircel-Maxis deal case in July 2018 against the 18 accused, which included P. Chidambaram.
The application added that “The competent authority in the Central Government has accorded sanction for prosecution of accused P Chidambaram under section 197 of CrPC and section 19 of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) and the same is being filed herewith.”
The response by the CBI came after the court pulled up the agency for not been able to file a proper charge sheet in the case and the judge O P Saini had given November 26 as the deadline to file the response.
The CBI also told the court that “sanction for prosecution in respect of remaining accused public servants are still awaited.”
CBI has also requested the court saying “the prosecution sanction received from the competent authority in the Central Government in respect of accused P Chidambaram may kindly be taken on record and a further time may be given to file sanction for prosecution in respect of remaining accused public servants,” as reported by The Indian Express.
The case has gained a political momentum after the BJP government came in power, and the CBI started a thorough investigation in the deals signed by the Aircel and Maxis, that had sought permission from the Indian government to fix the deal.
