Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Friday launched an attack on the government for detaining two senior Kashmir leaders using the Public Safety Act (PSA), and stated that the region was with India only physically, not emotionally.

The PSA is a 1978 Jammu and Kashmir law, that grants authorities to imprison a person for upto two years without a trial. Former Chief Ministers Omar Abdullah and Farooq Abdullah were booked under the law on 6th February, as were three others.

Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for criticising Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti in the Parliament on Thursday.

"You cannot govern Kashmir like this," he was quoted by saying by ANI.

The former CMs have been under detention ever since Article 370 was abrogated and the state was bifurcated into two Union Territories last year.

The centre says it opposes the prolonged detention of any individual, but will not hold back to support such a measure "if it contributes to peace and restoring normalcy".
