Aadhaar verdict: SC upheld constitutional validity of Aadhaar and says, ‘it empowers marginalised sections of society’
The Supreme Court has upholds the constitutional validity of Aadhaar card with some conditions. The apex court also said that it empowers the marginalized sections of the society.
However, SC has clearly said that Aadhaar card is not needed for the admissions in school and also for mobile connections. Also, the 12-digit unique identification number is not mandatory for the UGC, NEET and CBSE Exams.
Earlier on 10th May, a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra had reserved the verdict on the matter after a marathon hearing that went on for 38 days.
While reading the judgmenet, the five judge bench, which also comprises of Justices AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan, reading out the verdict.
Justice Sikri said that "minimal demographic & biometric data of citizens are collected by the UIDAI for Aadhaar enrolment. Aadhaar number given to a person is unique & can't go to any other person."

"Aadhaar empowers the marginalised section of the society and gives them an identity, Aadhaar is also different from other ID proofs as it can't be duplicated," Justice AK Sikri said.
