1993 Mumbai Blasts accused gangster Abu Salem, complaints to Portuguese Embassy officials say, I do not get chicken in jail'

The deported gangster and Mumbai's 1993 blasts accused Abu Salem has several complaints about the Taloja Jail where he has been lodged. The gangster complained to the Portuguese Embassy officials who came for a check the prison said that they don't give him chicken and he has been forced to become a vegetarian. The Embassy authorities arrived on Tuesday to check on him after he complained of a threat to his life.

Salem’s lawyer Saba Qureshi said in the meeting that the quality of food served to Abu Salem was really bad. She added that he had to eat only vegetarian food in the Taloja jail.


“His barrack doesn’t have proper sunlight. His toilet is small and dirty and he gets sick because of it.” She added, “He complained about his knee and eyesight problems to the doctors, who suggested he see a doctor in Mumbai, but for past one year, jail authorities are giving the excuse that few guards are available to accompany him,” NDTV quoted Saba Qureshi as telling.

Meanwhile, the Taloja Jail authorities said that they couldn't give him chicken. While they could provide him only eggs and that of doctor's recommendation to a prisoner. They further said that even though Salem was healthy, he did not stop complaining about his health. They dismissed his allegations as baseless.

According to Qureshi, India has broken an extradition treaty rule by awarding Salem life imprisonment. The Indian government had assured Portugal that Abu Salem would not be put behind bars for over 25 years.
