Hockey India on Saturday named the 33-member core group for the junior men's national camp, who will continue to develop their skills at the national Camp for the upcoming tournaments.

On May 24, after the conclusion of the 7th Junior Men National Hockey Championship 2017, Hockey India had named a total of 53 men who had reported to SAI, Bengaluru for a five-week camp.

During the course of the camp, the selection trials were conducted under the purview of Hockey India's Director High Performance, David John to identify a Core Group of players who will go on to represent the country at the upcoming tournaments.

The Core Group has been selected on the basis of speed, agility, skill and basic understanding of the game.

The vision behind organising the national camp for the junior men's team is to develop a Core Group of players for the prestigious 2020 Junior World Cup where the team will be defending their coveted title won last year in Lucknow.

The junior men's core group includes players from this year's National Championship Champions, Hockey Odisha, runners-up Steel Plant Sports Board, Hockey Punjab, Hockey Haryana, Uttar Pradesh Hockey, Hockey Chandigarh, Hockey Gangpur-Odisha, Sports Authority of India, Punjab & Sind Bank, Manipur Hockey, Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy, Services Sports Control Board and Hockey Bihar.

"After having analysed all the 53 players from various states in the country at the National Camp, Hockey India's Selection Committee has further pruned down the Junior Men's Campers to form the 33 Junior Men Core Probables who will carry on their training. These players will go through a development process which will see them transform into a strong pool of players who can go on to represent the country in future international tournaments. We conducted selection trials last week where we have tried and tested all the 53 players on the basis of their basics, strength, skills, speed and understanding of the game, and have been able to select the 33 best players who will be prepared for the upcoming tournaments. One of the main criteria for their selection was also their age. Only those born on or after 1.1.1999 have been selected in the core group as this is the age cut off for the 2020 Junior World Cup," said David John, Director High Performance, Hockey India.
