Iron Deficiency Widespread Among Women: Causes and Consequences
Kolkata: Iron deficiency has become a significant problem among women in West Bengal and across the country. According to experts, nearly 90% of women are affected by this deficiency, which often goes unnoticed.
Causes of Iron Deficiency
Dr. Agnimitra Giri Sarkar, a doctor from Kolkata, said that young women are increasingly suffering from iron deficiency, which is often neglected. Despite efforts to promote healthy eating and supplements, 90% of young women still suffer from inadequate iron levels.
The main reasons behind iron deficiency in women include heavy menstrual bleeding, restrictive diet, and excessive dependence on processed foods. Lack of education about iron-rich food sources and dietary requirements exacerbates the problem.
Impact of Iron Deficiency
Iron deficiency can lead to fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath. If left untreated, it can also affect cognitive function and overall energy levels. Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable, as iron deficiency can lead to birth complications, premature birth, and low birth weight, which can impact the child's long-term health and cognitive development.
Importance of Regular Check-Ups
Experts stress that merely taking iron supplements is not enough. Pregnant women must undergo regular check-ups to monitor their iron levels and address any deficiencies promptly.
Symptoms of Iron Deficiency
Fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath are common symptoms of iron deficiency. Women should be aware of their menstrual cycle and heavy bleeding, which can lead to iron deficiency. Screening tests, including complete blood count (CBC) and serum ferritin and transferrin saturation, can help diagnose iron deficiency.
Dr. B. Vishwas, a medical expert, emphasized the importance of addressing iron deficiency to prevent complications during pregnancy and childbirth.
Need for Awareness
Iron deficiency is a common nutritional disorder that can be addressed through education and awareness about iron-rich food sources and dietary requirements. It is essential to promote healthy eating habits and provide accessible resources for women to maintain optimal iron levels.
