Shiva Thapa: Meet the youngest Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics

The Indian boxer Shiva Thapa created history by becoming the only Indian boxer to qualify for the Summer Olympics of Rio 2016. While talking about his journey to qualify for the Rio Olympics the boxer Shiva Thapa had confessed that 'Road to Rio' was the toughest journey of his life.

Shiva Thapa was born on 8 December 1993. He basically belongs to Guwahati, Assam, India. The male Indian boxer is employed by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation. The Assam boy is ranked at the 3rd position in the bantamweight category in the AIBA Men's World Ranking.

Shiva Thapa's life apart from Boxing

The Indian male boxer Shiva Thapa other than boxing like singing and dancing. Whenever the Indian boxer is inside the ring, he knows how to entertain his audience. Shiva Thapa had won the medal in the AIBA (International Boxing Association (amateur) ) Junior and Youth World Championships. The Assam lad had also managed to reach the quarter-finals of AIBA World Championships in the year 2013. While talking about his personal life, Thapa had revealed that Padam (his father) is the person who had influenced him as a person. Gobind, the elder brother of Shiva Thapa had also achieved success in the boxing world, he was an Assam state-level medal winning boxer.

The chief operating officer of Olympic Gold Quest ( Gold Quest, a not-for-profit foundation to identify and support Indian athletes ) Viren Rasquinha talked about Shiva Thapa and said that,

“Shiva is an enormous talent. He must be groomed well because he has the talent, the right attitude and the hunger to succeed. OGQ has very high hopes from Shiva and I am confident that he will become one of India's top boxing stars in the near future.”

2008

Shiva Thapa had scored the first spot in the Indian Junior National Championships 54KG

He had at the third spot in Children of Asia Games (Yakutsk, RUS) 50KG

Shiva Thapa had managed to score first place in the Heydar Aliyev Junior Cup (Baku, AZE) 50KG.

2009

Shiva created a buzz by scoring the third spot in the AIBA Junior World Championships (Yerevan, ARM) 52KG.

He had also managed to win Indian Junior National Championships 52KG.

Shiva Thapa comes at the second spot in the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Singapore, SIN) 54KG.

2010

Shiva had managed to come at the second spot in the AIBA Youth World Championships (Baku, AZE) 54KG.

Shiva Thapa had ended his journey in the ASBC Asian Youth Continental Championships (Tehran, IRN) at the 7th spot in 54KG.

2011

Shiva Thapa had won Indian National Championships 56KG.

Shiva participated in the ASBC Asian Continental Championships (Incheon, KOR) 56KG. He lost to Abdul Rahman Al-Shammahri (KUW) WO in the first preliminary round

He had ended at the 6th spot in the Giraldo Cordova Cardin Tournament (Havana, CUB) 56KG.

He had won Beogradski Pobednik Tournament (Belgrade, SRB) 56KG.

Shiva Thapa had managed to score the second spot in the Indian National Games 56KG.

2012

Shiva Thapa was the youngest Indian boxer to qualify in the London 2012 Olympic Games (London, GBR). He has participated in the 56KG and Lost to Oscar Rafael Valdez (MEX) in the first preliminary round

Shiva had secured 6th spot in the Republic of Kazakhstan President’s Cup (Almaty, KAZ) 56KG.

Shiva had won the AIBA Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament (Astana, KAZ) 56KG.

Shiva had landed himself at the second spot in the Grand Prix Usti nad Labem (Usti nad Labem, CZE) 56KG.

2013
Shiva had secured the 5th spot after losing to Javid Chalabiyev (AZE) 3:0 in the quarter-final in the AIBA World Championships (Almaty, KAZ) 56KG.
He had won ASBC Asian Continental Championships (Amman, JOR) 56KG.
Shiva had managed to secure third spot in the Korotkov Memorial Tournament (Khabarovsk, RUS) 56KG.

He had managed to secure the seventh spot after losing to Mario Fernandez (PHI) 3:0 in the quarter-final in the Incheon 2014 Asian Games (Incheon, KOR) 56KG.

2014
Shiva Thapa was at the ninth spot in the Commonwealth Games (Glasgow, SCO) 56KG.
Shiva Thapa had managed to secure the 6th spot in the World Series of Boxing Season 2013/2014 56KG.

2015
Shiva Thapa was at the third spot in the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships (Bangkok, THA) 56KG.
He had won Doha International Tournament (Doha, QAT) 56KG.

Rio Olympics 2016

In the year 2016, Shiva Thapa had qualified for the Summer Olympics of Rio in 2016 in the 56kg event. But the Assam boy was not able to progress further than first round as he lost to 0-3 to the defending gold medalist Robeisy Ramírez
