Following a number of fake starts, the monsoon at last made it to the national capital bringing respite from the relentless heat.
The rainfall commenced on Monday and carried on through Tuesday. By 8.30 in the morning, Lodhi Road MeT station had observed 19.4 mm of rain, followed by 2.5 mm at Safdarjung and 2.4 mm at Palam.
The weather department had forecasted moderate rainfall over the national capital on 13th June. In the latest nowcast warning, thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate intensity rainfall (2.4mm to 64.4mm in 24 hours) and windy conditions with speeds between 24 to 40 km /hr would be seen over Delhi NCR — Bahadurgarh, Gurugram, Faridabad, Loni Dehat and Noida along with Sonipat and Rohtak.
Many became delighted at the relief from the heat and shared images and videos of the overclouded skies on social media platforms. However, for many, the state of mind swiftly altered as the much-awaited rainfall were accompanied by waterlogging, traffic jams and tiring commutes.
Many users also poked fun at the IMD’s false predictions with memes and jokes along with the hashtag #DelhiRains.

The routine date for the monsoon to arrive in the national capital is 27th June and this is the first time in almost 20 years that it has been held up.
Earlier, the weather department announced the the city would witness monsoon rains before time. However, with changes in weather, IMD got its monsoon prediction incorrect, on three instances.
Earlier, the IMD called the failure to forecast the monsoon in the national capital with accuracy “rare and uncommon”.
