Team India players observed a period of silence to pay respect to 40 CRPF jawans who died on February 14. When many sections of crowd were chanting loudly, Indian skipper Virat Kohli had to intervene to ask the fans to stay quiet during the two-minute silence that was observed.
Kohli while taking to the press before T20I series against Australia said, “Our sincere condolences to the families of CRPF soldiers who lost their lives in Pulwama attack. We stand by what the nation wants to do and what the BCCI decides to do.”
Speculations are that India might refuse to play against Pakistan in World Cup 2019. They will lock horns against each other on June 16 at Old Trafford in Manchester. The World Cup 2019 will start from May 30 in England and Wales. 10 teams will play in a round-robin format and each team plays matches against every other team and the top four team will qualify for the knock-out stages before lifting the coveted trophy on July 14.
There has been growing demands from Indian fans and some former cricketers to boycott Pakistan in World Cup after a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy of 78 vehicles carrying 2,547 soldiers was attacked by a car bomb in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on February 14. More than 40 CRPF jawans were killed and many others were injured. This is termed as the worst attack on Indian soldiers since 1989 insurgency started in the valley.
