Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane registers quirky record in Test cricket against Bangladesh

Indian captain Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane now hold the record of adding up the second highest number of runs for the fourth wicket stand in the longest format of the game. The duo attained this milestone as India continued to be in charge of the play on Day 2 of the historic Test against Bangladesh at Eden Gardens on Saturday.

While taking the crease for the fourth wicket, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have cumulated 2763 runs in 42 innings at an average of 69.07. Only Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan have amassed more runs for the same stand.

In the process, the Indian duo also went past Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, who had 2695 runs in 44 innings.

During the Day 2 of the second Test, Virat Kohli and Rahane just fell a run short of their hundred partnership as the latter succumbed to a bouncer as he top-edged a Taijul Islam delivery to be caught at point soon after knocking his 22nd Test half century.

Although the Indian skipper lost his partner in the 61st over, he went on to become India’s first centurion in pink ball cricket as he knocked his 27th Test century. Kohli also became the first Indian captain to exceed 5000 run mark in Test cricket.

At the same time, Kohli also outstriped former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting to take second spot in the list of captains with most Test centuries. The Indian run machine is now only behind former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith, who has 25 hundreds to his ranks.
