Tamil Nadu-born software engineer helps Romania break 12-year old T20I record

Romania cricket team on Thursday broke the 12-year old T20 international record after they beat Turkey by 173 runs. 12-years ago, Sri Lanka recorded history in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, when they beat Kenya by 172 runs to register the highest margin of win in T20I cricket.

The man who made it possible was a Tamil Nadu born software engineer who scored a century in the match. Sivakumar Priyalwar scored 105 runs off just 40 balls and helped his team register the record. Priyalwar also became the first centurion for Romania in T20I cricket.

“I can’t explain because I am an engineer working at a software company here. I used to play on weekends for Cluj Cricket Club. Last two years we were the champions of the national T20 tournament. Based on my performance I got selected in the national team,” he told indianexpress.com.

Before beating Turkey, Romania had beaten Austria by 31 runs in the first league match. Romania is currently on top of the points table and will face Luxembourg in their next match on Friday.
