Indian opener Rohit Sharma made the headlines on the opening day of the first Test against South Africa with a scintillating hundred in Vizag on Wednesday. With this century, Rohit Sharma attained an average of 98.22 in red ball cricket.

In 15 innings, Rohit Sharma has knocked 884 runs, which includes four hundred and five fifties.

Interestingly, after his first hundred as an opener, Rohit Sharma’s average is the joint best among all batsmen with 10 plus innings, sharing the number one spot with Australia’s legend Don Bradman, whose average was 92.22 in 50 innings.

Furthermore, hitman (Rohit Sharma) joined Shikhar Dhawan, Prithivi Shaw and KL Rahul to become the fourth Indian batsman to score a hundred while opening the innings for the first time in the longest format of the game.

Rohit Sharma also went on to become the first Indian to score a hundred each, in all formats, as an opener.

Rohit Sharma became the seventh batsman to score a hundred across all formats of the game. After Brendon McCullum, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Shane Watson, Ahmed Shehzad, Tamim Iqbal and Chris Gayal.

"I think it suits my game," Rohit Sharma said after rain forced early stumps on Day 1 in Vizag.

"Just wear the pads and go in to bat. I don't like the waiting game," he added.

"You know the bowlers who are bowling with the new ball, so the game plan is easier for you... At number six, the ball is reversing, field placement is different and you need to keep all those things in mind," Rohit Sharma said.

In the first Test between the two heavyweights, skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat. Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal took India to 202/3 at the end of Day 1.
