On this day, Sunil Gavaskar achieved a milestone no other batsman could in 110 years of Test cricket

On this day in history, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar became the first player in the world to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket. It was March 7, 1987, almost 110 years after the first-ever Test, Gavaskar achieved the feat during his 63-run knock in the first innings against Pakistan in Ahmedabad.

Till now 13 international batsmen have scored over 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Australian batsman Allan Border was the second player to achieve the record in January 1993. Out of 13, three of them are Indians including the all time great Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid.

Some other players who feature in the list are, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, Alastair Cook, Kumar Sangakkara, Brian Lara, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Mahela Jayawardene, Steve Waugh and Younis Khan.

Sunil Gavaskar made his Test debut for India in March 1971 and have scored a total of 10,122 runs in 125 matches. Gavaskar averages 51.12 in Test cricket and have an average of 35.13 in ODI cricket. Gavaskar have scored 3,092 runs in the shorter format of the game. He is the first Indian cricketer to carry his bat in Test cricket.

Gavaskar currently is one of the finest sportscaster and commentator in the world. He is on a duty with the BCCI for Australia's tour of India and is often seen on the field analysing the pitch or the players.
