India won the first ODI in Napier by 8 wickets with Shikhar Dhawan and Ambati Rayudu taking India to the finishing line. The match was reduced to 49 overs with target being cut short by 2 runs to 156. Rohit Sharma was dismissed by Bracewell on 11 runs in the tenth over.
Shikhar Dhawan scored an amazing half-centuries in India’s 9 wicket win over the Kiwis. Shikhar made 75 off 103 while Indian skipper made 45 runs off 59 balls before his wicket fell on Ferguson's ball. India won the match with 85 balls remaining.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand were bundled out for 157 runs with Kuldeep Yadav taking a four-wicket haul. Yuzvendra Chahal took two wickets in the 10 overs he bowled while pacer Mohammed Shami took 3 wickets in six overs.
Indian pacer Mohammed Shamial also became the fastest Indian to claim 100 ODI wickets. This was his 56th game in the 50-over format. Other Indians to reach the 100-wicket mark is Irfan Khan (59 ODIs), Zaheer Khan (65 ODIs), Ajit Agarkar (67 ODIs) and Javagal Srinath (68 ODIs).
New Zealand won the toss and captain Kane Williamson opted to bat first. New Zealand did not have a good start with the bat as opener Martin Guptill and Colin Munro were dismissed for 5 and 8 runs respectively but skipper Kane Williamson also scored an amazing half-century and smashed 64 runs.
India and New Zealand are playing a five-match ODI series in which the visitors are 1-0 up. The next match will be played at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on January 26.
