England defeats India by 31 runs to hand them their first loss of this World Cup and only their third one in three World Cups. England defeated India for the first time in a World Cup match since 1992. MS Dhoni was booed off the ground for taking a lot of singles alongside Kedar Jadhav.

England won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision didn’t backfire as England batsmen put up a show for spectators. England put up the highest opening partnership by any team against India in the World Cup. Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy notched up a 160 run partnership against the number one ODI team. Jason Roy was the first batsman to go as he was dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav for 66.

Jonny Bairstow went on to score his first World Cup hundred as he hit 111 runs including 6 maximums and 10 boundaries. Bairstow was dismissed by Mohammed Shami who also took his first five-wicket haul of World Cup. Joe Root was hitting the ball nicely before he was dismissed by Shami for 44.

Ben Stokes came in and destroyed the Indian bowling attack as he scored 79 off just 54 balls before Jasprit Bumrah dismissed him. England scored 337 runs while batting first and India had to score 338.

India came in to bat in the second innings and KL Rahul was the first batsman to go on a duck as he was dismissed by Chris Woakes. Rohit Sharma went on to score his third hundred of this World Cup and 25th overall. Rohit Sharma along with Virat Kohli made a good partnership but it was ended after the Indian skipper was dismissed by Liam Plunkett for 66 runs. Kohli became the first Indian batsman to score five consecutive half-centuries in World Cup.

Rohit Sharma was then dismissed by Chris Woakes for 102 runs and Indian batting attack came under threat. Rishabh Pant was looking good before he was dismissed by Plunkett for 32 runs. Hardik Pandya also scored fluently before he was dismissed by Plunkett again for 45 runs. MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav couldn’t accelerate and it cost India the game.
