Indian cricket team coach selection: This is why Virender Sehwag didn't get the job

The Cricket Advisory Committee's (CAC) comprising Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar, appointed Ravi Shastri as the head coach of Indian cricket team earlier this week.

Former explosive batsman Virender Sehwag, who was largely considered as the front-runner earlier, was interviewed by the CAC along with other short-listed candidates.

According to a report in Times of India, Sehwag's presentation was the third most impressive after Ravi Shastri and Tom Moody's as described by the members.

The report mentioned that the mentor with the IPL team Kings XI Punjab approached the captain Virat Kohli in a bid to get a feel of things. Kohli, reportedly, didn't have any issues with Sehwag applying for the job.

However, things may not have gone as per the plan for Sehwag.

The report added that Sehwag had proposed to bring a team of support staff along with him. His team included physiotherapist Amit Tyagi and Kings XI Punjab assistant coach Mithun Manhas. Kohli, then, told the former Indian opener that he had reservations with the proposal.

As per the TOI, this is what Kohli told Sehwag, "Paaji, I have a lot of respect for you for what you can bring to the table but you have to understand that there is a professional set-up in place, therefore this cannot happen. The rest is up to the CAC. There is a support staff in place and has worked with this team for a while now. In fact there are individuals who understand the needs of team members on an individual basis."
