Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni is one of the most successful captains the country has ever seen. Dhoni-led India to many victories during his 12-year stint as captain. MS Dhoni was first appointed as the Indian captain on 13 September 2007.
MS Dhoni’s appointment as captain came as a surprise for everyone, the decision was made after senior cricketers – Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid pulled out of the inaugural T20 World Cup. India had played only one T20 international before that.
On his first day as captain, Dhoni-led team India against Scotland in a Group D game of the T20 World Cup. But the match was abandoned due to rain and India played Pakistan the very next day. Dhoni scored 154 runs from six innings in the tournament but he stood out for his excellent captaincy.
On Friday, MS Dhoni's fans took to Twitter to share pictures and post messages with the hashtag "12YearsOfCaptainDhoni" and soon it became the number one trend in India.
A team leader should be able to lead by example especially when the team needs the most. No one can forget the inning played by MSD in 2011 World Cup Final at Wankhede, Mumbai#12YearsOfCaptainDhoni pic.twitter.com/EsKSYBCrPr
