The first match of the one-day series against Sri Lanka has turned in to a nightmare for India. Sri Lankan Captain Thisara Perera decided to bowl first by winning the toss against India at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala on Sunday (November 10). Rohit Sharma is carrying the responsibility of captaincy in place of regular captain Virat Kohli. He is captain of India for the first time in ODIs. In Sri Lankan bowlers, Suranga Lakmal and Angelo Mathews broke the backbone of Indian batsmen. India lost both the openers at just two runs.

Shreyas Iyer, debuting, scored 9 runs in 27 balls. Dinesh Karthik, who came in at number four, played 18 balls and scored (0) runs before getting out on LBW. It is the record of playing the most balls for India to get out on 'Duck' (0). The Indian team also made the embarrassing record of the lowest score in the first PowerPlay. The team scored just 11 runs on the loss of 3 wickets in the Powerplay.

Manish Pandey got out in Suranga Lakmal's bowl and he was fifth wicket to fall, the team was at its lowest score at that time. Lakmal gave 13 runs in 10 overs with 4 maiden overs bowled 4 Indian batsmen. However, the team managed to avoid getting out of their minimum score (54) in ODIs. MS Dhoni and Kuldeep Yadav took the team across 54.
