Rishabh Pant is the obvious replacement for former Indian skipper MS Dhoni in the Indian cricket team as expressed by the management. Rishabh Pant has performed well in the Test series but he is yet to prove his mantle in ODI and T20I cricket.
“Rishabh Pant is always exciting but he has to watch his back as my favourite Sanju Samson is throwing some serious challenges at him,” Gautam Gambhir was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
Sanju Samson is posing a serious threat to Rishabh Pant especially in the shorter format. Sanju Samson is also a wicket-keeper which is what the Indian team management requires.
Sanju Samson is not a part of the national team now but he broke into the India A side recently and performed exceptionally well against South Africa A. In the last game of the five-match ODI series, Samson scored a blistering 91 off just 48 balls.
Rishabh Pant had an average series against West Indies but the team management and skipper showed confidence in him and kept him in the playing XI for the entire fixture. Pant has also got a chance to play against South Africa.
