England beat Australia by 8 wickets to reach World Cup final after 27 years

England beat Australia by 8 wickets to become the second team to reach the 2019 World Cup final. Chris Woakes was declared the man of the match for taking three wickets in the match. Australia was bundled out for 223 runs in 49 overs which England chased down easily in 32.1 overs.

Australia won the toss opted to bat first which proved to be a costly decision for them as they lost three early wickets in the first powerplay. Australia lost their skipper Aaron Finch for a golden duck, their highest run-scorer David Warner was dismissed for just 9 runs and Peter Handscomb was dismissed for 4 runs.

Steve Smith and Alex Carey notched up a 100 run partnership to stable Australia’s innings but after Carey was dismissed for 46 runs, Australian batting order were dismissed like a pack of cards. Glenn Maxwell scored 22 and Mitchell Starc scored 29 beside Steve Smith’s 85 runs. All other batsmen were dismissed for a single digit score.

In reply, Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow started beautifully as 124 runs together. Jonny Bairstow was dismissed for 34 runs while Jason Roy scored 85 runs including 9 boundaries and 5 sixes. Joe Root and skipper Eoin Morgan finished the game for England as they scored 49 and 45 runs respectively.

England will now play New Zealand in the final of World Cup 2019. Whoever wins it will be the first time they will lift the World Cup trophy. England will play the World Cup final after 1992, while New Zealand played their last final in 2015.
