Ravichandra Ashwin and Mohammed Shami scalped 4 wickets and 3 wickets respectively for the Indian side.
England skipper Joe Root top scored for the hosts with a fluent 80 runs but his run out from a brilliant throw by Indian Virat Kohli sparked their demise.
