2019 was yet another year which saw some solid hits at the box office from Vicky Kaushal’s Uri: The Surgical Strike to Ayushmann Khurrana’s Adhadhun. The year was full of amazing films, however, there were some films that had an unconventional storyline, however, they failed to leave their impact on box-office as well as people’s mind.
Well, only some directors have the courage to bring out such movies for the viewers who are away from the mainstream. Let us take a look at the 2019’s unconventional films that stands among the best Bollywood films.
1. Article 15
Anubhav Sinha’s film starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Nassar, Manoj Pahwa, Sayani Gupta among others left the audience dumbstruck after showcasing the real situation on caste discrimination. The film deals with Article 15 of the Constitution of India, which prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth. The film didn't cover just one event rather multiple incidents including 2014 Badaun gang-rape allegations and 2016 Una flogging incident.
2. Sonchiriya
Starring Sushant Singh Rajput, Bhumi Pednekar, Manoj Bajpayee, Ranvir Shorey, among others dealing with the story of a dacoit in 1975. The film is set in the Chambal where the dacoits termed themselves as Baaghis, the rebels. Abhishek Chaubey’s film didn't hit the box-office but garnered attention with its distinctive storyline where the film investigates the moral and karmic burden of crime on those who commit it and how these notions are tied to ideas of patriarchy and masculinity.
3. War
One of the most anticipated films starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff grabbed eyeball with its distinctive storyline. The film narrates the story of an Indian soldier who is assigned to eliminate his former mentor who has gone rogue. However soon story takes a mysterious turn and throws the light on the black side of politics. The film didn't have any dull movement and the actins in the movie were fresh and digestible.
4. The Sky Is Pink
Shonali Bose’s film starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Farhan Akhtar, Zaira Wasim among others. The story is inspired by a true incident which is narrated from the point of view of Aisha Chaudary about the emotional and physical tolls on her parents after they found out she has Pulmonary fibrosis.
5. Gully Boy
Zoya Akhtar’s film starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi among others narrates the story of a rapper from being a struggler to a superstar. The story also deals with poverty and domestic abuse and makes an incisive argument about the immorality of art and also functions as a biting critique of convention, monotony and society’s persecution of youthful eccentricity.
