Bollywood celebs pay money to get followers on social media? Mumbai Police to investigate

After Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, many big names have come out who have been slammed for their groupism and nepotism in the film industry. Now, another trouble that could unmask many faces from the Bollywood industry is paid followers on social media.

The Mumbai Police have started clamping down on many high profile personalities and other Bollywood, sports celebrities who could be involved in the racket.


Recently, Mumbai Police have busted a racket that helped in increasing the followers on social media. Therefore, Police have decided to vigil the activities of these public figures and to check whether they are not helping these fraudulent.

According to reports, the racket also includes international companies.

Police suspect that such rackets could threaten the law and order situation in the country.

For further investigation in the matter, an SIT has been constituted by Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh, DNA report said.

The racket was uncovered after the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) of Mumbai Police arrested a man named Abhishek Dinesh Daude. According to the police, Daude is creating fake profiles on social media.

Police suspect that this might threaten the law and order situation in the country. An SIT has been constituted by Mumbai Police Commissioner Parambir Singh to probe the entire matter.

Daude was working for a foreign social media marketing company www.followerskart.com, which now on police radar.

Reportedly, this is the first case of its kind in the country.

"We have investigated and found as many as 54 firms involved in this racket. SIT comprising Crime Branch along with Cyber Cell has been formed which will help in investigating this case," Mumbai Joint Commissioner of Police Vinay Kumar Chaubey said.

Due to the increasing use of social media, people thought they will become a famous or more prominent person if he or she has huge followers on social media. This practice of increasing followers has become a business and people are paying a hefty amount to grabbed more followers on social media.

The scam came to notice after Bollywood singer Bhumi Trivedi found her fake profile on social media and then she lodged the complaint with police. During the investigation, police discovered that a person had created Bhumi’s fake profile on Instagram and started chatting with people and kept screenshots of it. The fraudster showed these to others to increase followers.

Mumbai Police have found that as many as 176 high-profile people, including Bollywood celebrities, sportsperson, and other allegedly paid money to get followers on social media.

Police believed that fraudulent are using two techniques to increase the followers on social media. First is manual where they create fake accounts or the second is with the help of software code which works automatically.

Police have launched the investigation in the matter.
