Nicotine Addiction in Children

Australia is set to ban disposable vape imports starting January as a measure to address nicotine addiction in children.

Legislative Measures
New laws will be introduced to prohibit the production, advertisement, and supply of single-use vapes within the country.

Changing Perceptions of Vaping
Despite being initially marketed as a smoking cessation tool, Australia's health minister notes the emergence of a "new generation of nicotine dependency."

The Nature of Vapes
Vapes, or e-cigarettes, are lithium battery-powered devices containing cartridges filled with liquids that include nicotine, artificial flavourings, and various other chemicals.

Existing Regulations and Challenges
Despite regulations since 2021 requiring a doctor's prescription for e-cigarettes, rates of addiction have continued to rise, indicating challenges in enforcing restrictions.

Alarming Statistics
Studies conducted in Australia reveal that over a quarter of teenagers aged 14-17 have engaged in vaping. Additionally, research from Australia's Cancer Council charity indicates that nine out of 10 teenagers in the same age group find it easy to access nicotine vapes. This alarming data underscores the prevalence and accessibility of vaping among Australian teenagers.

Health Concerns and Lack of Understanding
Experts caution about the insufficient knowledge of the long-term effects of vaping. Research links vaping to chronic lung disease and asthma, and scientists in Australia warn of chemicals impacting lung health in vape liquids.
