Joe Biden Open to Neurological Exam
Washington, DC [US]: Amid mounting pressure from fellow Democrats for him to end his re-election campaign, US President Joe Biden has signalled his readiness to undergo a neurological exam to address concerns about his mental fitness for office. However, he stated that he would only do so if his doctors recommended it, as reported by CNN.
Biden's Statement at NATO Summit
During a rare solo news conference on Thursday, following the NATO Summit, Biden stated, "I am not opposed, if my doctors tell me I should have another neurological exam, I'll do it." He reassured the public, "Every single day I'm surrounded by good docs. If they think there's a problem, I promise you - or even if they don't think it's a problem and think I should have a neurologic exam again, I'll do it. No one's suggesting that right now," according to CNN.
Addressing Concerns and Defending His Fitness
Despite growing concerns about his age, Biden lamented, "No matter what I did, no one's gonna be satisfied." He disclosed having undergone three brain health checks while in office, the most recent one in February. "I'm tested every single day on my neurological capacity - the decisions I make every day," he affirmed, citing age as a source of wisdom.
Commitment to Remain in the Race
Biden affirmed his commitment to continue his presidential campaign but acknowledged the need to persuade detractors and concerned voters about his fitness for office following a challenging debate performance. "I'm determined on running, but I think it's important that I allay fears by letting them see me out there," he said.
Campaign Strategy
Highlighting his recent robust travel schedule and engagement in over 20 major events across states like Wisconsin and North Carolina, Biden emphasized, "I'm going around making the case of the things that I think we have to finish and how we can't afford to lose what we've done," referring to his administration's accomplishments.
Democratic Party's Internal Debate
The pressure on Biden intensified after a leadership call on July 8, where House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other top House Democrats urged him to step aside from the 2024 campaign, citing concerns about the party's electoral prospects. Despite these challenges, Biden remains confident in his ability to defeat former President Trump.
