In Photos: Smoke and red lava as seen on Mount Agung in Bali
About 150,000 people were evacuated as the flow of glowing red lava grew powerful on Bali’s Mount Agung. The burnt orange lava and column of ash rising from the volcano could be seen in most images and videos from the place.
The Balinese volcano is the highest point on the island and the nature of eruptions has grown increasingly from phreatic to magmatic levels. The eruption has also disrupted the plans of thousands of travellers who were planning to visit the place.
Also, due to the current rainy season authorities have warned the residents about the dangers of hazardous ash and rapid-moving mudflows known as lahar which is moving down the volcano’s slope.
Bali’s Ngurah Rai airport remained closed and around 445 flights were cancelled stranding around 59,000 travellers.
It was in 1963 when instruments were installed to measure the activity of Mount Agung, but as of now, volcanologists are finding it difficult to compare the historical data and predict the intensity of future eruptions.
