Donald Trump pleads not guilty to federal charges involving classified documents
Former US President Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to charges of mishandling sensitive classified files in a federal court hearing held in Miami, Florida.
This marks the first time a current or former US president has faced a federal criminal indictment.
Presenting a composed demeanour with crossed arms, Trump made his second court appearance this year, donning a dark suit and red tie. After the proceedings, he travelled to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he addressed his supporters.
Trump Asserts Right to Hold Classified Documents
Speaking in front of a backdrop adorned with American flags, Trump, who is currently the leading contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, proclaimed that he possessed "every right" to hold the classified documents.
However, he stated that he hadn't yet had the opportunity to thoroughly examine all the boxes containing the materials.
Trump maintained his adherence to the law and took the opportunity to voice a series of unsubstantiated claims and grievances against President Joe Biden and his previous opponent, Hillary Clinton.
Expressing Gratitude and Entering a Plea of Not Guilty
Before departing Miami, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express gratitude for the warm welcome received on a "sad day" for the country.
In the courtroom, a subdued Trump observed as his attorney, Todd Blanche, entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf.
The charges include 37 counts of illegally retaining classified documents and obstructing the government's efforts to retrieve them. Blanche confidently stated, "We most certainly enter a plea of not guilty," during the proceedings.
Trump Waves to Supporters
Following the hearing, Trump offered a thumbs-up gesture to his supporters as his motorcade departed from the courthouse.
While leaving, a protester dressed in a prison jumpsuit briefly interrupted the motorcade's path, but security quickly intervened, ensuring the incident remained largely peaceful throughout the day.
